On Criticism

We teach people how to remember, we never teach them how to grow.”

Oscar Wilde, The Critic as Artist

Sometimes, it’s hard to take criticism as anything other than a personal attack. Sometimes, we ask for constructive criticism but what we really want is for someone to stroke our hair and tell us we’re pretty.

Accept the damn compliment.

I am pretty terrible at dealing with feedback, good or bad. I tend to disbelieve the good because surely, you can’t be talking about me.

Hello, Imposter Syndrome.

But you’re not perfect, okay?

Conversely, I will absolutely believe anything negative you say, and take it to heart, and worry about it for far longer than its merits

Sometimes, bad feedback is good

Yes, sometimes criticism is pure nonsense and feels like a personal attack.

Sometimes, criticism is actually constructive and meant to help us improve our skills and maybe even be better people.

Don’t dismiss it, just because you don’t want to hear it but don’t dwell on it for longer than it deserves.
